FG Still Not Able To Present New Minimum Wage Despite Public Assurance-Labour

Organized labor and the government are at odds over the proposed wage increase. While the labor sector is advocating for a salary of N494,000, the government insists on a figure of N60,000.

Despite the Nigerian government's assurances of a wage exceeding N60,000, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) revealed a lack of progress in this regard.

The NLC, through its official communication channels, emphasized the absence of any substantial developments regarding the new minimum wage, pointing out the delay in presenting a new wage template by the Minister of Finance, as directed by President Bola Tinubu.

President Tinubu had instructed the finance minister to produce a new wage framework within two days, yet as of June 6, the NLC reported no tangible progress.

The dispute persists between organized labor and the government, with the former demanding N494,000 while the latter proposes N60,000. Despite the initiation of an indefinite nationwide strike, later relaxed for a week, the government has not made any concrete offers beyond N60,000.

The President of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Festus Osifo, confirmed the absence of any new proposals from the government. He expressed hope for progress but indicated that discussions have centered on principles rather than specific wage offers.
