Heavy Security At Kano Court As Hearing On Emirate Tussle Begins

 

Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies have been deployed to strategic locations in Kano as the legal dispute over the Emirate leadership commences on Thursday morning. The Federal High Court situated on Court Road, Tarauni in Kano is currently hearing a lawsuit challenging the reinstatement of Lamido Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano by the State Government.

SaharaReporters previously detailed how the state government passed a bill two weeks ago, dissolving the additional emirates established by Abdullahi Ganduje's administration. The bill, titled ‘The Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024,’ triggered the official reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. However, the Federal High Court in Kano subsequently issued an eviction order against Sanusi II from the palace.

Presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Liman, granted the order in an Exparte application in Suit No FHC/KN/CS/182/2024 filed by Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of the Kano Emirate. The suit named the Kano State Government, Kano State House of Assembly, Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Attorney General of Kano State, Commissioner of Police, Kano State, Inspector General of Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Department of State Services (DSS) as defendants.

In another development, a High Court in the state issued an order restraining the recently deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and four others from assuming the title of monarchs in the state. The court's ruling, made after hearing an ex parte motion, prohibits the ousted Emirs from performing official duties and mandates them to vacate their palaces immediately.
